Amid the coronavirus pandemic, The Star has stood down 90% of its 9,000-people workforce and may fire most as all of its three venues closed in Australia.

Australia.- The coronavirus pandemic has forced The Star to close its venues and potentially pushed it to fire lots of people. The company has stood down 90% of its workforce, which involves roughly 9,000 people.

“The Star has taken a very difficult, but necessary, decision in relation to its workforce,” they said in a letter to the ASX. “We are in the process of temporarily standing down over 90% of our approximately 9,000 employees. These stand-downs include senior management,” they added.

“To assist our employees at this time, The Star has provided two weeks of paid pandemic leave. In addition, employees will be able to access any accrued annual and long service leave entitlements.”

The Star Chairman John O’Neill AO addressed the possibility of having to fire most of the staff. He assured, “this is a unique environment and one beyond (their) control.”

“We’re determined to balance the necessary measures needed to protect the business while considering the considerable human impact to our workforce.”
