Singapore Pools launches its online betting service

Singapore Pools will open the doors to its online betting service, and it will become the first to do it under renewed laws.

Singapore.- The state owned lottery will launch its online betting service after Singapore legalised online betting earlier this month. The Ministry of Home Affairs exempted Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club, which will launch its service on November 15, from legislation that blocks access to gambling sites and stops electronic payments to them.

Both companies had to pay fines of approximately US$734.000 for every guideline breach, and even though they can offer online betting services, they’re banned from offering casino-style games like poker and blackjack. If players want to use their services, they have to go to a physical outlet to verify their identification and show that they’re 21 or older.

Earlier this month the National Council of Churches Singapore (NCSS) asked the government to review its decision to allow the companies to start running their platforms. “Removing the temptation of gambling from living rooms and workspaces will ultimately strengthen the fabric of our society for generations to come,” they stated.

The government said that by allowing these companies to launch their services they’re reducing the risks and creating a safer environment for those players who want to enjoy the online betting market.
