Colorado: sports betting handle reaches $300m in March

Sports betting in Colorado has seen a handle of more than $2bn since its launch last May.

US.- The Sports betting handle in Colorado reached $300m in March, up 12.9 per cent from February, which had seen a drop of 18.5 per cent after a handle of $326m in January.

The figure for March means the state has seen a total handle of $2bn in wagers since the market launched last May. The Colorado Department of Revenue’s Division of Gaming said Colorado has passed the $1bn mark in December.

Division of Gaming Director Dan Hartman said in a statement: “We look forward to what will emerge in the market moving forward, as more and more sporting leagues resume a regular schedule of play and what that will translate into returns for Coloradans.”

Industry analysts at PlayColorado attributed the month’s success to the NCAA’s March Madness tournament.

They said: “Considering the circumstances Colorado launched under, at a time when major U.S. sports were dormant, the state really has been one the U.S. sports betting industry’s great success stories.”

The sports with most wagers during the month of March were:

  • Basketball: $106.9m
  • NCAA basketball: $70.9m
  • Ice Hockey: $13.7m
  • Tennis: $10.8m
