WHO says organising Tokyo 2020 won’t ‘be easy’
Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says organisers are keen to face the challenge of hosting the Games post Covid-19.
Japan.- The Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that running Tokyo 2020 will not ‘be easy’ due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year’s Games have been postponed to next year in the hope of allowing officials time to prepare for thousands of athletes, coaches and spectators to attend the event safely.
Speaking at a joint news conference with the International Olympic Committee, the WHO’s Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said: “We hope Tokyo will be a place where humanity will gather with triumph against Covid.
“It is in our hands, but it is not easy. If we do our best, especially with national unity and global solidarity, I think it’s possible.”
Health experts and organisers have offered contrasting views as to whether the summer games can go ahead next year.
