South Korea: Kangwon Land casino resort closes again

The only casino resort where locals are allowed to gamble has closed again due to a rise in Covid-19 cases.

South Korea.- Casino resort Kangwon Land has announced it has closed again following a government order due to a rise in Covid-19 cases.

South Korea recorded more than 2,200 new Covid-19 cases over a nine-day period up to Saturday.

Kangwon Land is the only casino resort in South Korea where local people are allowed to gamble. The gaming area will be closed until at least August 29.

The final reopening date will be decided following advice from health authorities, and may be put back if the situation is judged to remain critical.

The company expects a revenue loss of about KRW7.5 billion (US$6.3 million) based on daily average casino sales during the first half of 2020.

Kangwon Land first closed in late February due to the spread of Covid-19 infections in South Korea. It resumed some casino operations for VIP areas in May.

Kangwon Land reported a loss of KRW45.56 billion in the second quarter, compared to a KRW50.94-billion profit in the same period last year.
