Online gaming grows in France
The growth of the online gaming market in France continued in 2019, and the GGR of the whole sector increased by 18% to €1.4 billion.
France.- The online gaming market in France has registered its highest levels since 2010, as the gross gaming revenue (GGR) of the sector rose by 18% to €1.4 billion last year. ARJEL said that its three online gaming segments reported improvements in 2019.
Online sports betting was the main contributor in 2019, as the stakes increased by 30%, while the turnover of the sector increased by 27%. For the second consecutive year, the GGR is higher than the other two segments combined, and it represents 62% of the total turnover of the sector.
At the end of 2019, turnover from online poker increased by 1% in cash games while it rose 8% in tournaments. In total, GGR from poker games increased by 6% in 2019 to €272 million, which is the second-highest since 2010.
Online horse betting increased for the third consecutive year. Bettors invested €1.1 billion in wagers on horse racing in 2019, an increase of 5% compared to 2018. GGR amounted to €271 million, the highest since 2010.
These annual figures reflect the attractiveness of the market to the general public, ARJEL said. Moreover, around 2.8 million people bet online last year, an increase of 5% when compared to 2018.
“For 2020, the imminent installation of the national gaming authority (ANJ), brings regulation of this sector into a new era. By entrusting it with a broader scope of intervention and strengthened powers, the legislator has set up a solid body, at the height of the growing enthusiasm of our fellow citizens for the gambling game evidenced by this 2019 assessment of the approved market in line,” explained the local regulator of France, ARJEL.
