First case of Pneumonia virus hits Macau

Pneumonia virus outbreak that started in China has now spread to Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Macau.

Macau.- Authorities have confirmed the first case of Wuhan coronavirus-linked pneumonia in Macau. Despite huge efforts to keep the infection out of the international gaming hub, the pneumonia outbreak has now hit the city.

The first victim is a 52-year-old businesswoman from Wuhan who had spent two days at the New Orient Landmark casino hotel before she displayed symptoms of the virus and was hospitalised.

According to official information there are 440 confirmed cases and 9 people dead. Symptoms include fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing. The viral infection can be transmitted from person to person and the virus can mutate as it spreads.

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has asked local gaming operators to reinforce preventive measures at their casinos.

Bernstein analysts forecasted this week that the situation could impact GGR if the spread of the virus gets worse, as it seems to be doing.
