Macau gambling revenue plunges by almost 80%

Macau.- Casino closures from the Coronavirus outbreak have caused gambling revenue in Macau to drop further in March.
The world’s biggest gambling hub generated 5.26billion patacas (HK$5.1billion) in March according to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
These figures mark a 79.7 per cent drop on Macau gambling revenue from the previous year, a trend that is continuing as the world battles the Coronavirus pandemic.
In February, gross gaming revenue was 3.1billion patacas ($386.5million) down 87.8 per cent from a year earlier.
These figures may improve in April, as casinos have been reopened in the Chinese territory, although they remain under strict measures.
Macau continues with tight border controls in place, imposing a ban on entry for citizens of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China if they have travelled to a foreign country in the past 14 days.
Residents of those three locations are still able to enter Macau if they haven’t been overseas but will need to go into a compulsory 14-day quarantine in a designated hotel.
