Summer Grand Sumo Tournament cancelled
Major sporting event the latest to be cut due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Japan.- Japan has cancelled another major sporting event due to the Coronavirus pandemic, with the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament the latest to be called off.
The major sumo event, which was scheduled to take place at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan between May 24 and June 7 has been cancelled by the Japan Sumo Association.
The association had originally considered holding the Tokyo tournament without fans in attendance. But it was decided to cancel the event completely with the pandemic at its worst peak in Japan.
The cancellation comes after Osaka’s Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in March became the first top-level meet in the country to be held without spectators.
Japan has already postponed the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo to next year, with many suggesting that it may not take place at all.
