Hong Kong police arrest 29 during illegal gambling raid

Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po based syndicate raked in more than HK$14million over the past six months.

Hong Kong.- Police in Hong Kong have arrested 29 suspects of a gambling racket that operated a network of underground casinos.

According to the South China Morning Post, the syndicate was based in Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po and raked in more than HK$14million over the past six months.

Police believe they have broken up a sophisticated network behind underground casinos that used arcade machines for betting games and served those from the criminal underworld.

On Sunday, police arrested 28 suspects where two alleged ringleaders were picked up in the syndicate’s Mong Kok command centre.

Then, on Monday, Police arrested a 29th suspect who was also believed to be another ringleader.

In Hong Kong, money laundering carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison and a HK$5million fine.
